Training Tips: Egton High Moor Cycling Climb

New for Struggle Moors 2024, Egton High Moor is an alternative route out of the Esk valley over the moor to Rosedale.

Steep Start

Featuring in Simon Warren's 100 Climbs, Egton High Moor, is just that; a high moorland road connecting Egton and the surrounding villages in the Esk Valley to Rosedale Abbey.

While this climb on paper looks tame (nearly 7km at 4% average) the first third is tough, with ramps of over 20%.

It may be tough, but be thankful you're not faced with our original route over The Horror.

Exposed Moorland

The climb begins from the village of Egton Bridge and climbs through the trees and around a hairpin. It's narrow and steep here so watch out for Sunday drivers.

As the gradient eases the landscape opens up over the moorland. From here it will be a battle against the conditions rather than the gradient if the wind is blowing.

The current KOM to beat on Strava's Egton High Moor leaderboard is Matthew Brown's 16:25, while local pro Abi Smith holds the QOM with 19:01
