EVENT DETAILS

Sunday 29th September 2024 from 9:00am at Sutton Bank National Park Centre

The North York Moors National Park designates September as Mindful Month; a way to slow down after a hectic summer and explore the great outdoors at a steadier pace.

Mindful Month is also a great time to share your love of cycling with partners and family. Minds & Miles is a cycling event created to help you slow down, look up and enjoy the North York Moors National Park by bike - and share it with your favourite people.

The Rides

We've got four fully signposted routes to choose from for every bike and every rider, making the day ideal for all abilities.

Our Road Routes take in quiet country lanes and rolling roads. Our 50km route is a gentle ride skirting the Howardian Hills and takes in only 2,000ft of climbing. It's an ideal route for beginner road riders. Our 80km route features a fantastic scenery route around over some more challenging terrain (4,000ft) before joining the 50km route for the rolling route home.

Our Gravel Route takes in the best North York Moors gravel surrounding Sutton Bank including moorland tracks, single-track hard-packed bridleways and tree-covered forestry tracks.

Our Family Route is an off-road traffic-free route ideal for hybrid or mountain bikes. The 25km ride features gentle gradients and quiet bridleways for families to ride at their leisure. There's lots of spots on route to stop and enjoy a picnic with fabulous views, or why not stop at High Paradise Farm half way around for a well earned coffee/hot chocolate and a cake to fuel you home. Bike hire is available at Sutton Bank Bikes but you must book in advance.

The North York Moors Trust has been selected as the charitable partner for Minds and Miles. The Trust is dedicated to nurturing a thriving, healthy, and resilient future for nature, people, and communities within the National Park and its surrounding areas, including Teesside and Scarborough.

The Trust undertakes a variety of inspiring and innovative projects that connect people with nature to improve mental health and wellbeing through art, recreation, education, and community engagement.

By participating in Minds and Miles, you have the unique opportunity to pedal with a purpose to support the North York Moors Trust’s work. The Trust will receive a percentage of all proceeds raised through ticket sales, which will help fund health and wellbeing projects and activities.

If you are encouraged to raise additional funds on behalf of the North York Moors Trust, please contactenquiries@northyorkmoorstrust.uk to find out more information.

Testimonials

"What a route, what an event. Well marked, great feed station with top notch gels and bars, brilliant pre and post atmosphere. These big rides are much better when part of an event, when you share your experience with others, it drives you on all the more and I’ll certainly be back."

Frequently Asked Questions

Event Info

What support is on the route?

Our roving mechanics are on hand to get you back on the route should you have an issue. We do however recommend everyone knows how to repair a puncture and come equipt with the tools and spares to do so. We also have marshals throughout the route, roving medical support and well-stocked feed stops and a broomwagon. Our friendly team is there to ensure you succeed in completing your Struggle challenge.

What is at the feed stops?

Our feed stops are really well stocked with the best sports nutrition on the market from Maurten. We also have super-taster energy bars from Veloforte (vegan and gluten-free but contains nuts). There's also bananas and other grab-and-go snacks like coconut macaroons, Battenberg and Soreen. Our final feeds always have our locally sourced Lishmans Pork Pies, Maurten caffeine gels and mini cans of Coca Cola for the final push for home.

How fit do I need to be?

Struggle Dales is achieveable for any ambitious road cyclist. That said, it requires prior training and preparation. With sensible pacing, optimal fuelling, proper preparation and plenty of courage, its a challenging goal worthy of the hard work.

What are the cut off times?

There are cut off times but these are very generous to encourage everyone to make it around the route. We suggest steadier riders sign-on the day before and start as early as possible.

What is at the start/finish?

There is ample free parking at the start and finish and toilet facilities. There is a coffee van serving up a pre-ride caffeine kick and we have post ride nosh and beers at the finish. There is no running water or showers, so please come with your water bottles pre-filled.

Where can I stay?

The start/finish is just a few miles from Harrogate Town Centre, where there is a host of hotels and B&Bs to suit all budgets. I'm afraid there is no camping/campervans allowed to stay overnight at the Army Foundation College.
